Intro: Thesis: In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, the symbolic meaning that the accordion, the basement and the books play a constant role in telling the story of Liesel Meminger and in the lives around her.
Outlining the main symbols and a quote about one of them. ( the accordian, the books, the basement.)
Her memory of himmel street was represented by 3 main objects, the basement, the accordion and her books and at the end of the book she loses all three of them

Since Liesel is a main character maybe mention her a bit less than the others so you don’t go off on a rant.

How big of a mix of good and bad symbols are there?
The mix between good and bad meaning symbols is big enough that it is noticeable when you really look into it, but discreet enough that is you speed read it you won’t catch the whole meaning. A lot of the symbols have the mix of the two though some of the bigger symbols change in meaning or have a main meaning
Can symbols change in there meaning (give an example). Do some items hold a mix between good and evil meanings? (i.e Mein Kampf)
How the basement changes from a metaphorical safe haven for Liesel to a literal one for Max.
For instance the accordion, at the beginning of the book it holds a strong meaning for Liesel and is a constant reminder of Hans.

1. The changing of emotions that liesel gets when she sees the accordion and/or when she is in the library ripping up the books ( the change from a positive emotion to a negative one. Also maturation.)
2. Liesel and Hans still doing their reading lessons in the basement when Max is there.
