Neither John, Gwen, nor Miguel began taking drugs with the intention of harming others. Nor were they aggressive or abusive in nature. Yet their long-term substance abuse harmed others, including family members, friends, and the communities in which they lived.
John’s substance abuse had negative consequences for his family and his community. First, during his years in high school, John started using marijuana and alcohol with his friends. Also, while using drugs, his grades at school started to fail and the dream of being an architect began to fade. Getting a job was also difficult after high school. Many of the jobs, John worked always ended in letting him go, after calling in too many times for being sick. First of all, Miguel started using crystal meth in middle school, but because of the drug use, it made him violent and aggressive towards anyone who came in contact with him. Miguel enrolled in 3 different colleges where he meets other drug users and eventually moved in with each one at various times. Because of the drug use that was out of control he dropped out of each college. After the death of one of his friends from drugs, Miguel decided to try and end his life by overdosing. That was not the only time, though, at his 28th birthday party he tried to overdose on heroin. When two EMT’s revived him after his heart stopped, he cried out that all he wanted to do was die. In response to this the EMT’s rolled him out of the ambulance and left him. Finally one day Miguel found a job that he really had an interest in and realized that he couldn’t accomplish any goals he tried to make in life and use drugs both at the same time. After joining a support group he turned things around for himself and now at 31 is enjoying life and speaks out to people that there is a way out and hope to
