There has been a lot of attention on cops lately since the media has been keeping track of their abuse. More people are starting to notice what’s going on around them and try to make a difference towards people’s rights and freedom. Cops cannot do whatever they want because they feel like it and people are fighting for change. Collins, Allyson, and Cynthia Brown. Shielded from Justice: Police Brutality and Accountability in the United States.…
Blue Lives Matters is a movement made to damage control for police officers. With technology being more accessible we are seeing more of the police brutality that we normally would not have seen. Coates is successful in at bridging the gap by showing that police violence is the result of an ignorant society. The task of trying to better the police is a complex idea and will not be something that can be fixed overnight.…
In his essay “For Cops…” Kevin Johnson claims that videos of police officers are placing their actions under new scrutiny and changing the way that claims against officers are played out in court. Police have responded by trying to limit such recordings when they feel that they interfere with police actions. The fear that is most present in law enforcement is that these videos will cause officers to change how they behave in a life or death situation. To combat this, officers are now receiving training to deal with being recorded.…
An article “Are we becoming a police state? Fife things that have civil liberties advocates Nervous” by Sal Gentile is talking about how the police in the United States are really aggressive to American citizens. A lot of U.S citizens got killed by the police last year. As it stated in the article, the ACLU has criticized the targeted killing program as blatantly violating the Fifth Amendment, which guarantees that no American citizen shall “be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” However, even when the law said it too, the police still kill the citizens with small reasons.…
That is why most cases aren’t reported. People who report/file a complaint develop a fear of policing and that themselves would be classified as a suspect in future crimes, and be harassed…
In an age where everything is moving in the digital direction, it is vital that we shower not only the streets but also embrace technology and social media in the fight for social justice. People have been protesting for days on end in disapproval of the current state of affairs between the police and citizens, more correctly, citizens who identify as “colored.” I am one of those citizens. I am one of the tens of thousands who was ridiculed and mocked for expressing a second amendment right to civil disobedience. This form of protest is the fixed mindset of Civil Rights activists, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Andrew Young, which proved successful in their time.…
The coroner determines who the corpse was, how, when, and where they died. An inquest report is a judicial inquiry in order to prove the manner and cause of one’s death. A coroner uses medical examinations in order to investigate deaths and bodily injuries. Sometimes, these are under suspicious circumstances.…
First of all, social media can be used for crimes. This is obvious because it states “Gangs use social media to recruit younger members, coordinate crimes, and threaten other gangs” (Socialnetworking.procon.org NA). Society today is way different than it was 20 years ago. Kids no longer have some of the problems many people faced back then. For example, adolescents stress over things like why their picture didn’t get any likes or running out of shows to watch on Netflix.…
From April 2009 to June 2010 5,986 reports of misconduct have been recorded and three-hundred and eighty two of those reports were fatalities. An example of what is happening is a case that involved Roy Middleton, a sixty year old man was shot at fifteen times for car theft but was actually mistaken. Luckily thirteen of them were misses, and not even knowing about the situation they shot the car and injured Mr.Middleton and judges found that the two deputies should not be criminally charged with wounding an unarmed man. This brings me to the three stages of oppression.…
If we have more awareness of this subject we would have fewer incidents in my opinion. More people aware of how to act when being questioned and how not to be perceived as a threat. If we had the media show more about the officers as in “walk in their shoes” for a day. Have the media go through the paces of training in firearms, driving, and defense tactics. Show them in scenarios and have them answer to what they did what they did.…
Police officers in the United States are inherently more fearful of citizens than law enforcement should be. Again, in European countries police officers treat people with respect and try to solve the problem. In the United States, police officers are very cautious and don’t keep their hands too far away from their weapon. This underlying fear is what needs to be eliminated in order to prevent unnecessary police shootings and brutality. If police don’t have to worry about getting shot at every time they respond to a call, they can assess and aid the situation much more efficiently.…
Why is police brutality more prevalent nowadays? Accusations of the use of excessive force by the United States police department continue to generate headlines more than two decades after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which brought the issue to mass public attention and urged some Law enforcement reforms. According to the article written by John Wihbey and Leighton Walter Kille, excessive-force complaints against law enforcement officers, internally generated, have more than doubled from 2003 to 2008, which are the most recent statistics available. While some citizens argue that police officers are doing their job, is police violence more prevalent because of social media dramatization, lack of proper tactical training, or is it the vigilante…
Racial profiling and police brutality has grown to become a major issue in this country. More specifically, the act of violence by law enforcement toward African- Americans has caused an outrage all over the country. In protest against the unequal treatment of African-Americans by police officers the hashtag # BlackLivesMatter has been trending all over social media.…
Police Discretion is at the core of policing, allowing officers to approach different situations with different approaches. Discretion is seen as the most essential element of policing, yet discretion is also the source of many problems. Over the year’s discretion has become a more prominent issue amongst the public, and due to social media and the increased use of the internet, videos and new reports can be shared with millions in a matter of seconds. Yet the truth is the discretion an officer’s use is comprehensively subjective to real-world situations rather than adopted by a certain agenda. Police discretion an essential and required part of police work (Schulenberg, 2015, pg.247).…
Law enforcement agencies have been using social media over the last few years to enhance their image as well as to inform communities on a range of issues, such as crime prevention, street closures, and various scams. In doing so, they have also discovered that social media can be a powerful tool for law enforcement officers and investigators during criminal investigations. While it will not completely eliminate them form using the traditional methods for an investigation i.e. placing a wanted poster in the post office or a missing child picture on a milk container. This additional resource can assist them with moving an investigation along more effective and efficiently. The use of social media can reach a broader audience and information…
