A scientific study is conducted on two children. One child is happier, has increased spatial intelligence, improved test scores, and more accurate motor controls. An MRI scan reveals that this child also has a larger, more symmetrical brain than the other child. The difference? One child has been exposed to an abstract, long-considered useless art form: music. The other has no musical experience. Anyone who has experienced the joys of music knows that it offers much more than what meets the ear, and the scientific community has utilized 21st century technologies to determine exactly what music can do for the human brain. While exposure to music on any level proves beneficial to brain development, playing music offers tremendous improvements in the coordination of motor and auditory skills, develops larger connections between the brain’s two hemispheres, and even enables neuroplasticity. So, how does music improve the brain’s ability to function? Listening to music is an excellent place to analyze these effects. When a person feels enjoyment, the brain releases dopamine and brings the listener pleasure. The brain releases dopamine during any type of pleasurable experience, music included. Science has revealed that dopamine activity in the brain is greatest seconds before the climax of a song.
