Do you ever think about how connected you are to technology? How long do you spend on your phone, your computer, or even your tablet? Do you spend a few hours a day, a few minutes or not at all? In today’s world, we are run by technology. Everything we use is some form of technology that has been improved and created to fit our needs. This lifestyle has become the norm, but has the regular person ever stopped to think about how this convenience is impacting their bodies and mind? With the growth of technology, researchers have been able to perform numerous studies that focus on this specific question. This result of lack of focus and comprehension is due to technology overuse. This overuse has changed the way our brain works. According to technology writer, Nicholas Car, he has observed that “the emergence of reading encouraged our brains to be focused and imaginative. In contrast, the rise of the Internet is strengthening our ability to scan information rapidly and efficiently” (Taylor). His study is one of the many studies that have shown that it not only impacts older people, but also young children and young adults. During young children’s development to adulthood they are often at times exposed to technology such as iPad, phones and computers early in life. This constant exposure to those devices can affect their brains on a level that can rewire their thinking. That rewiring of the brain can cause their attention span and focus to be decreased. With adults as well as children, using the internet over a long period of time has caused our brains to mentally skim pages for the information that we need. Younger adults who have grown up in the technological age, over time have had their brains rewired to skim and therefore their attention spans have suffered because of this.
