Have you ever felt like you don 't care about other people? I have to admit, I have. My first thought of today was not, "how can I help my fellow human beings?" It was more, how can I get to work on my goals as soon as possible for as long as possible without getting interrupted.

Can you blame me? Everyone is looking after themselves so, why should I look after them?

This is mentality of most people I know. We work for ourselves, we seek pleasure, we avoid pain, we try to take care of our family, sometimes our friends and it stops there. The barista at Starbucks would be lucky to see us crack a smile and would be bewildered if we genuinely ask her if she is having a good day and we actually listen to her response.

Yes, there are people that are naturally compassionate and they care deeply about other people, it has been my experience that this is the exception rather than the norm. But a question formed in my mind this morning, why don 't we care more?

So I started thinking about a conversation I had with a friend this week.

While having lunch we started to talk about free will. I told him about the Sam Harris book with the same title. How I was persuaded to be compassionate with an argument directed to the head as opposed to the heart, the book succeeds in arguing the reasons why people cannot help to be who they are and act how they act.
