In a book titled, “Big Data, A revolution that will transform how we live work and think” written by Vikto Mayer-Schonberger and Kenneth Cukier, states big data is based on the ability to harness information in different ways and to produce useful insights and services of value. This big data will become a critical source of economic value and a source of innovation (Mayer-Schonbrger & Cukier, 2013). This ideology holds true for community colleges as well.

How can community colleges benefit from Big Data?
Community colleges have begun to understand the advantages of Big Data to improve upon student performance and raise professor effectiveness, while reducing administrative workload. Big data is a source by which it can provide information about students and like interests across multiple community colleges, enabling them to learn from one another.
Student performance data is increasingly being captured as part of software and online classroom exercises and testing. This data can be enlarged with behavioral data captured from sources such as; social media, student-professor meeting notes, blogs, and student surveys.
There is a wealth of public data on data.gov, as well as many open data sources at institutions of higher education across the country. Particularly the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDs) which includes information from every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in the federal student financial aid…
