Herbal Diabetes Treatment Momordica Charantia, also known as the bitter melon or karela, has been used as an herbal treatment for diabetes throughout the world for centuries. In fact, it “is commonly known as vegetable insulin” (Uebanso). It is primarily grown in tropical areas throughout the Amazon, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. Its is physically described with a green, oblong cucumber like shape with prickles protruding from it. The seeds, fruit, and tissue are all used for treatment. The effects of charantin on blood glucose levels were identified by two Indian researchers in the year 1960 by the names of Lotlikar and Rao. It is composed of steroidal saponins, and and sitosterol and stigmasteryl glucosides. It is partially water soluble and its physical appearance is a white crystalline substance without any taste. Recently there have been new extraction methods found to remove charantin from the bitter melon. In order to extract charantin from momordica charantia it must be put in a high pressure container with either acetone or ethanol. This process is known as Pressurized liquid extraction or PLE. In a study performed by Chulalongkorn University, charantin was extracted using several different chemicals. It was found that water and dichloromethane are less efficient than acetone or ethanol processes. Now there is a legitimate methodology to pharmacies this chemical and truly synthesize it as a drug. This compound alone can be used to treat diabetes and has the potential to replace insulin regimen injections of diabetic patients. Compounds like charantin are becoming common alternative medicine techniques for diabetics and they are free from any of the side effects of insulin or other pancreatic regulating drugs. It is a natural chemical and is effective at the same time. None of the effects of synthesized drugs will appear. It is known by researchers as the active hypoglycemic ingredient to momordica charantia. Charantin plays the largest if not the most important role in allowing momordica charantia to be so effective in its

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation of less-volatile substances from volatile substances, such as sugar from water, can be used to separate a liquid-liquid mixture if the boiling points of the component liquids differ by more than 40-50°C. A plot of temperature versus volume for a simple…
