A million things come to mind when the name Henry Denton is said. Henry Denton is the main character and narrator in the novel We Are the Ants, and is the strongest character in a novel that was made recently. Although Henry may be strong, he does have his weak sides. Henry is depressed, stressed out, overthinking, and he has a tragic home life; unironically, that is how he is so strong. Henry is also creative and loyal but he does tend to hold on to the past. Out of all of the things said about Henry, the three that stick out the most are that he is strong, he is creative, and he overthinks things. Henry Denton is stronger than the U.S. army. While at home he has to deal with his older brother, Charlie telling him that he is the reason their dad left. He has to watch his own grandmother slowly lose her memory and every ability that has to do with remembering. Also at home his mother is depressed and does not have a lot of money to support their household. He takes care of his grandmother, keeps Charlie in order, and tries to inspire his mom to keep doing what she loves, cooking. On top of it all, his boyfriend, Jesse committed suicide last year and Henry believes that he is the one to blame. To cope with the grief of Jesse, Henry gets in an unhealthy relationship with the most popular guy in school, …show more content…
“Sometimes I think it’s my fault [Jesse’s suicide]. Other times Audrey’s. Or maybe his parents’. I just need someone to blame. Might as well be me” (Hutchinson 254). Henry blames himself for Jesse’s suicide when in reality it was not his fault. He does not realize that sometimes people are depressed and incidents happen. Henry thinks his new boyfriend, Diego hates him after one little fight. Charlie has also convinced Henry that their dad left because Henry is so messed up, “Mom? Did dad leave because of me?” (417). Henry always thinks that everything is either his fault or has something bad to do with

He remembered he had often cursed the brindle cow and her mates, and had sometimes flung milking stools.” This shows that Henry is a coward by his decisions because after signing up for the war and learning more about it he starts regretting the decision he made and…

Throughout his time in the Civil War he learns more about himself than he would have ever imagined. A transition from teenager to being considered a man is a one that can be hard to grasp and confirm. For Henry he took a big step as a young man to participate in the Civil War. For such a generally young person it must have been a huge wake-up call for Henry to realize that his life is on the line now every minute of his life for the next couple of years, and in my opinion that can mature a person very quickly.…

In this episode of M*A*S*H, “Abyssinia, Henry,” Henry is discharged from the military, but he ends up dying on his way home after leaving. The nonchalant attitude of the men that were in the middle of a war shows the typical hippie attitude of the 70's generation where they did not care about anything. When Klinger comes out dressed in a fruit costume, Henry says, “Klinger, that outfit might just get you that Section 8” (“Abyssinia, Henry”). This interaction shows how Klinger is pretending to go insane to get a section 8 or kicked off the military because he does not want to be there, which could serve as comic relief, but is actually making fun of the military.…

Frederic Henry had major changes throughout the novel. His attitude towards the war, Catherine, and friends had all changed significantly. One could argue that he didn’t pay much mind towards the war he involved himself in at first, but once he did, he became less enthusiastic about it as he became more aware.
