Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to acquire, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. Health literacy affects people 's ability to navigate the health care system including; filling out complex forms, finding providers and services, Sharing personal information like health history with providers, engaging in self-care and chronic-disease management, and understanding mathematical concepts such as probability and risk ("Health Literacy - Fact Sheet: Health Literacy Basics," n.d.). Health literacy covers a variety of skills beyond reading and writing. It includes speaking and listening, cultural and conceptual knowledge, and the ability to apply numbers as needed to manage one 's health. Patients are often faced with complex health information and treatment decisions and therefore need to be proficient with set of skills to be able to function efficiently in today’s advancing health system. Some of these skills include ability to access health care services, analyze relative risks and benefits, calculate dosages, communicate with health care providers, evaluate information for credibility and quality, interpret test results, and locate health information. In order to perform these skills patients would need to be visually, computer, information and numerically literate.
