Summary of how behavior impacts health.
Behavior is comprised of individual beliefs and a multitude of psychological models. Behavior encompasses illness inception, managing the illness, also the outcomes of a person’s health. Health behaviors are defined as behaviors associated with a person’s health can have a negative or positive impact on the person. Examples would include smoking, consuming alcohol, diet, sleep and physical exercise. An individual’s behavior is impacted by their beliefs, which include attitudes, beliefs about control, risk perception, and belief about confidence. I will include a scenario and incorporate the elements of belief, and the show how the behavior is impacted. In the past, an overweight person thought exercise was boring and redundant (attitude). The stage of change model is the process of inducing and sustaining change. Model is comprised of five stages: pre-contemplation (no thought of change), contemplation (thinking about change), preparation (, action (activating a new behavior), and maintenance (sustaining). The stages don’t always occur in sequence as people’s processes are not the same. When a person needs to consider a behavior, they will consider the costs and the benefits.
The health belief model (HBM) predicts that behavior is based on a person’s core beliefs. These beliefs are utilized to predict the chance that a behavior will happen. The protection motivation theory (PMT) was created to incorporate emotional element, particularly fear, into the HBM. There are five components: severity, susceptibility, response effectiveness, self-efficacy and fear. The PMT is also used to foretell the scope of health behaviors.
