Healing with food is not a new concept. In earlier years; pre-antibiotics, people would search for specific plants, roots and spices in the woods to be boiled, placed on the skin, and so forth to nurse a patient back to health. Today, people are faced with so many options to maintain ones “optimal health”. Diets, such as the paleo, non-GMO, vegetarian, organic, gluten-free, Mediterranean, etc. are presented to people daily. My Plate, a dietary guideline that replaced the food pyramid and the Dietary guidelines for Americans published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (2010) suggest what the average person should consume in one’s daily diet. According to an article in the American Journal of Hypertension (2010), people diagnosed with hypertension should restrict their salt intake (p. 1095). However, according to Web MD we need iodine, found in table salt, for the health of our thyroid (2005-2015). As you can see, choosing the right diet can be confusing. We can also assume that diet does play a part in many of our illnesses and our overall wellbeing. So, what’s the big deal about Hypothyroidism? A few common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss and memory loss. The thyroid is a small butterfly organ located in the neck. Although very small, it is a “big deal” since the thyroid has much influence in how other organs work in the body. In hypothyroidism, a person’s thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormone. The opposite is true for hyperthyroidism where the body produces too much thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is not gender specific. Hypothyroidism can affect infants, teens and adults.
