Hate Crimes in New Jersey

"...Until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream." These powerful words were uttered by Martin Luther King in the midst of the racial unrest in the 1960's. During this time period many people of the black race were affected with discrimination of all sorts. Now-a-days, crimes once driven solely by hatred for one's race now stem from opposition to one's religion, gender, disability, or sexual orientation. In a study done in 2009 by findthedata.org, statistics show that New Jersey actually has the second highest number of hate crimes reported following only New York which has a population of roughly 10 million more than New Jersey. This country and the world definitely is in trouble because we can not seem to get around the fact that some of us our different. If we can not accept the worlds diversity then there will never be an end to hate crimes no matter what laws are passed. Once we understand that a person is a person no matter what race, sexual preference, or religion they are that will be the cure for hate crimes. So I think there should be more education of our young children on different things and less coverage of hate crimes and bad news in the media. That being said however, in the recent event of Tyler Clementi’s suicide as the result of an invasion of privacy hate crime. Whether or not the invasion of Clementi’s privacy was actually a hate crime was very controversial when the media was first notified and started coverage on the incident. Whether or not Dharun Ravi had hatefully intended for his roommate to be so distraught that all he could think to do was to take his own life, the fact of the matter is that Ravi knew that his actions would cause harm to Clementi both internally and ultimately external. One would think that after seeing such an even happening at such a prestigious institution that law makers around the state would think of upping the penalties for hate crimes especially after now not only Clementi won’t have any opportunities but Ravi won’t either.
