According to Huffington Post, the deadliest city in the country is Chicago. The endless debates about guns have recently been working in favor of gun proponents. Conversely, some believe that guns should be banned, because banning them will drop the violence rate. However, some civilians believe they are necessary to help stop crime. An interview done by Matt Vespa, a reporter in CNS News, with John Lott, an author in the Crime Prevention Research Center, showed that since 1950, every public mass shooting (with the exception of two) in the U.S. has occurred in a place where civilians are banned from carrying firearms (Vespa). Banning guns will take away the rights and libraries of many Americans by not letting them protect their families and themselves. After a 5-4 decision on gun rights, David G. Savage from the Tribune Washington Bureau writes, “…the justices said the right to have a handgun for self-defense is ‘fundamental from an American perspective (and) applies equally to the federal government and the states.”(Savage). Americans like to think they are safe at all times, but the police cannot be everywhere. In order to be protected, American need to feel safe so they would prefer to have firearms. Matthew Walberg from the Chicago Tribune reports, “…FOID (Firearm Owner Identification) cards has increased an average of about 72,000 a year since 2009...”(Walberg). Based on the data obtained by Illinois police, there are now about 1.5 million holders of Illinois firearms owner 's identification cards which correspond to an 11.5 percent of Illinoisans (FOID holders in Illinois).
