Zeus, the king of Olympus, sent Hermes to see the mortal king. When the king saw Hermes, he rushed over and knelt at the immortal prince’s feet. In his hand was a large stone.
“What is this?” the god demanded.
The king replied, “Inside this rock is a new substance. May I humbly suggest you bring it to your blacksmith, ask him to shatter the stone and give a shard to each of the gods.”

From around the room sprang up new jewels: sapphires, diamonds, rubies, amethysts, and others. The gods looked at one another’s jewels jealously. Hades knew his relatives would use their gems to outshine each other, so he devised a plan.
Hades was summoned to Olympus. “Hades, help us,” the council demanded.
“Why would the council need my help?” Hades asked sarcastically.
The Olympians were above pleading with the outcast and refused to be further insulted by the king of the dead. The gods decided to have the peacemaker, Hestia, beg to persuade Hades. “Please take these shards into your domain. Since they originally grew in stone underground, Athena thinks these shards will grow too.”
Hades brought the shards back to The Underworld, where they blossomed in Persephone’s garden.
When the time came to return the jewels in exchange for a seat on the council, Hades gave the jewels to Thanatos, who spread a fraction of each jewel throughout The Underworld.
