Aside from the main areas of hardware and software, I can explore areas like nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, robotics, power/energy, and many others. Grand Valley State University offers many of these opportunities and I am excited to find my passion within these areas and ultimately use the knowledge and passion I gain to better the world in many ways. Although the paths are seemingly infinite, I believe it will not take long for me to specialize in an area that will allow me to contribute to these causes in a significant way. Technology is the future, investing in the future is the smartest move we can make, I have decided to invest my time and education into creating a better future for the younger generations. One of the most prevalent issues in our society today is transportation, specifically automobile related deaths and injuries. Transportation systems are being improved everyday with programs like intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) funded by the Department of Transportation. According to the CDC, everyday 90 people lose their lives due to automobile accidents. This adds up to over 30 thousand deaths per year, not to mention the 1.2 million injuries resulting from automobiles. A third of these deaths are caused by speeding and another third are caused by intoxication. Both of these can be prevented with technology. Recently, driverless cars have emerged as a viable solution to preventing human error from causing accidents all together. Driverless cars would not only save thousands of lives, but also help to eliminate traffic jams. Honking your horn in frustration will be a thing of the past. Sebastian Thurn, the man behind googles driver less car is probably the most well-known for his contribution and autonomous driving systems. In a TED talk from 2011, Sebastion passionately stated, “I'm really looking forward to a time when generations after us look back at us and say how ridiculous it was that humans were driving cars.” I share Sebastions vision and passion. I would jump at any opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to help to create safer forms of transportation. Improving transportation not only means improving the lives of those around us, but also improving the health of the planet we live on. Whether you believe automobiles have an effect on climate change or not, the harmful pollutants that are released into the air cannot be denied. Environmentally friendly cars are on the rise: Tesla,
