I would think to myself how hard can it be to get a full ride. Now I’m a senior in high school with no full ride scholarship even though throughout high school I kept my grades up and I even played basketball in hope of a scout would come to my small charter school and discover my talent but that didn’t happen either. Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

After reading, “The Promise” from C. Wright Mills’ The Sociological Imagination, I believe that Mills’ message is that no one’s problems are unique and because you have them that does not make you special. This seems like a harsh interpretation of his words but let me explain. Mills implies that what you are going through may seem like you are the only one in that situation, but once you look around and pay attention, you will notice that other people are dealing with the same troubles. The overall theme of the passage was that to understand your own personal troubles you must look at it in greater context of public issues. That circumstances like a failing marriage, losing your job, or being without a home are not simply personal troubles…

Until I get out of college, I will struggle with my financial situation. Picking up hours at work will not work for me since I can only work on the days I have someone to care for my child, which is not often. My biggest funding support, recently, was financial aid. Financial aid rewarded for my tuition, books, college fees, and they’re mailing me a check for $1,800, that is the only way my bills are being paid this month. I try not to eat out as frequently or spend money on things I do not need, to prevent my financial difficulties from getting any…

This was a complete and utter shock for me because at the time I was under the impression I would: go to school, go eat, go back to my apartment and then sleep without complications, and that, would be my daily routine, but I was absolutely wrong. For someone who has never had to pay for anything by herself up until this point in my life, it has been incredibly challenging. Saving money is a prestigious skill, one I definitely have not acquired, and I believe that to be the biggest roadblock that stands in the way of me being successful in college and earning my degree because without money it is nearly impossible to attend college and in my case, medical school as well. Money is one of the main contributing reasons of why young adults do not enroll directly into a university, and if I would have known I would be paying for my own education during August when my mother’s bomb of an announcement was thrown at me, I more than likely would have enrolled into a community college first. I work at HEB Monday through Friday at two to eight, and Saturday and Sunday, seven to…
