Buzz, buzz, buzz! Knock, knock, knock! Something all high schoolers hear around 6:00 in the morning on a school day. For most high schoolers, it is a difficult time to wake up, since last night they spent all night watching class videos for Pre-Calculus, studying for their test for AP World History test, and finally falling asleep at midnight. Now Irondale students head to school looking and feeling like they are part of the cast of The Walking Dead from all the sleep deprivation. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens need on average 8 to 10 hours of sleep. (National Sleep Foundation) Students at Irondale High School however, are losing those essential sleep hours due to start time and other requirements for high schoolers, such as homework, and extracurricular activities. Taking a survey of Irondale students, an average student gets about 6 hours of sleep. This is something that is unacceptable and the school board needs to address this. To solve this issue of high school students not getting enough sleep, Irondale High School should start at a later start time, so that students can get the sleep they need.
A possible solution is to have a later start of 8:25 instead of 7:25. Changing the start time adds the time for more hours of sleep that teenagers needs. Students require 8 to 10 hours of sleep (National Sleep Foundation), but currently Irondale students are getting an average of 6 hours. Losing this sleep limits students ability to learn, listen,…
