God’s commands and blessings came together. Abraham obeyed God’s command to leave his own country to a land he did not know. He and his descendants’ journey was full of uncertainty and challenges, but God’s command and promise led them step by step, generation to generation to see the glory of God.
Christian Mission is like the journey to the Promised Land. In Matthew 28, Jesus commanded the disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you”, and Jesus will “be with disciples always, to the very end of the age.”(Matthew 28:19) Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples for him from all nations. It is a missional command for all of us today. People in Mosaic time experienced wars, disasters, loss of faith, etc. in their journey to the promised land, same as people today who are worried by the cultural differences, language barriers, religious conflicts, etc. when they think of mission. However, making disciples of all nations is not a recommendation from Jesus, but a command. The mission journey is full of uncertainty and challenges like Israel’s journey to the Promised Land several thousand years ago, but the promise from Jesus of his return is valid and is our ultimate hope as disciples.
