God created us for His glory (Isaiah 43:6-7). God was to be the King who reigned over heaven and earth and we were to be His royal family, those through whom He would implement His supremacy. But we failed and we sinned against God, disobeying Him because of our prideful desire to be equal to Him. As a result, universal brokenness was born, in our relationship with God, with each other and with creation itself. We shattered the gift of divine fellowship and the perfection of God’s world. No matter how hard we try to reestablish what has been destroyed, we cannot. Only God can fix it and that is exactly the mission He graciously embraces: to reconcile us back to Himself.

For His own glory, God, through the family of Abraham, formed a special people group – Israel (Isa 49:3) and thus begins His mission through which, He will bless all the nations (Gen 12:1-3). However, through their wanderings in the wilderness, God’s chosen people continually rebelled against Him and worshiped the idols of the neighboring nations (Exod 32:11-14). Angry and rejected, the God of love relented as He refused to abandon His mission to reconcile the human race to Himself (Ezek 20:16-17) but also for His own glory (Isa 48:9-11). Even with the continual setbacks that God faced, He was able to channel them into promises of future reconciliation (Isa 9:1-7 & 53).
