Christianity and Islam were two growing and developing religions. These two religions had very different opinions on merchants and their roles in society. The Bible and qurans beliefs both did not seem to match with their ideas on trade. It seem as if Christians believed in that merchants and traders were sinful and warned them with the consequences of participating in trading. Muslims believed that the merchants were a benefit to their society and actually endorsed this way of life. Later, over time, these beliefs changed and now merchants were criticized for their wrong doings. Muslims began having the desire for fairer trade and merchants were shunned for this. Aquinas began speaking about trade as something that is beginning to be more common. Not only was he saying merchants should be honest but the buyers as well showing more care for the merchants themselves in the Christian religion. It was beginning to become an actual occupation. As seen in many other countries during this time such as Portugal, it became a very dominant trading country from Europe that was Christian. It ruled over many ports. This shows the beginning of acceptance of trade in the Christian community. Also, in document 6, it is shown that two churches were asking for a merchant to sell them religious paintings showing the acceptance of merchants into their lives.For the Muslims though, trading began to become a disreputable part in society. It seems as if fraud was becoming more common and people were cheating eachother out. The Muslims began to only hope for fairer trade. Muslims began seeing the flaws and negativity of trade. This is all shown in document 2 and 5 where merchants are being spoken about how they should be more fair when selling their products.
