I do not believe that the global flow of people, food and manufactured goods should be reduced because limiting or reducing this flow would do little or nothing to help improve public health or to curb the spread of global diseases (Globalization101, pg. 20). For example, fifty years ago, 70 percent of the items that the average grocery store stocked were grown, produced or processed within 100 miles of the store. Now the average supermarket sells food items that have traveled, on average, 2,000 miles from where it was grown, produced or processed (Globalization101, pg.13). Therefore, as more and more foods are exported and imported, the exposure to potential food-borne illnesses is increased. Not all countries who export foods have in place the food safety standards that developed countries have. Furthermore, in developed countries such as the United States, much of the food preparation jobs in the food service industry are performed by immigrants from developing countries where intestinal infections are endemic. Again, reducing the incidence of diseases and infectious outbreaks will require countries to spend more money. International food safety standards must be established that will govern all aspects of food production as well as what can and cannot be exported and imported. In order for countries to be allowed to export food products, they must adhere to the established international food safety standard. In addition, regular periodic and thorough screening of all workers who handle food products is vital in order to monitor and control the presence of pathogens in the food production
