Orwell speaks through Nineteen Eighty-Four in regards of the social and civil liberties as Orwell tried to depict how the world had been at the time which was modernist thinking (“Modernism”). In addition to his other book, Animal Farm, they both represented “social unrest and societal failure with the rise of new governments. In these books all civil liberties have been taken away, the government controls all facets of society, and eventually tries to control the human process” (“Modernism”) which reflects Orwell’s fear as he was in the Spanish Civil War and experienced everything first hand. Orwell expressed his feelings and emotions through his famous books as they were being read by many people at the time. Writing stories was a way for him to depart from existence and enter a different world he loved and enjoyed.
