Generation X Demographic Cohort Analysis

Generation X, or Gen X, is the demographic cohort following the baby boomers. There are no precise dates for when this cohort starts or ends; demographers typically use starting birth years ranging from the early-to-mid 1960s and ending birth years ranging from the late 1970s to 1980. Generation X is a relatively smaller demographic cohort sandwiched between two larger demographic cohorts, the baby boomers and the millennials. Generation Xers as children grew up in an era when divorce was prevalent and messy. This strengthened their resolve to be better lovers in their relationships and general life. As such Generation X has influenced a decrease in divorce. Generation X, are children of baby boomers and as such are children of the divorce booms of the 1970s. Generation X are the first generation that grew up experiencing of the reality of being raised by a single parent, while their parents fought out divorce battles. A 2014 report in the New York Times, for instance, argued that "The divorce rate peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s and has been declining for the three decades since." (Mathews) According to Chris Mathews “a new analysis by University of Maryland sociology professor Philip Cohen argues that this is not exactly true. While the rate of divorces is falling, Cohen argues, that doesn't mean that a smaller share of overall marriages are lasting forever. In fact, he says that the conventional wisdom that half of all marriages (52.7% to be exact) will ultimately end in divorce is still true.” The reason for the low rates of divorce among generation X can said to be that fewer of them are getting married and those who decide to get married wait until they are much older before doing so.
