On May 12, 1962 General Douglas MacArthur spent his last day on duty at West Point and gave his very famous Farewell Address. President Kennedy had just been elected President of the United States and the Americans were head over heels for him. He gave an overwhelming peace among the U.S. with his caring words of charisma. Many things were happening in this time period such as the fight for Civil Rights among the African Americans in the U.S.. The story of four young black students who sat down at the “whites only” counter went what today's used term “viral.” Everyone was coming together whether it were African Americans, Hispanic, and even Anglo. These were just few of the many events going on during this time period.

Although Americans were still in the “Golden Age”, many were scared of what was going on with the Vietnam War. Many thought that the end was near and very few people had hope. President Kennedy helped the American people calm down when he was elected President of the United States but there were still many people in a chaotic fuse. What General Douglas Macrthur said in his speech really helped and calm the world viewers. Hearing all this the american people felt the need to come together in unity and really be as a whole.
