Gender Stereotypes

Great Essays
For this activity I had to walk around the local mall and identify three stores for men and three stores for women. At first it was a little hard because I would walk past stores like Forever 21, Hollister, JC Penny and ect. What these stores have in common is that they are all coed stores. I was looking for stores that reinforced one gender role more than the other.
So for men (and boys) I picked Men’s Warehouse, Cap World, and Champs Sports. For women (and girls) I picked Victoria Secrets, Charlotte Russe and Torrid. I’m going to start with men (and boys) first at Men’s Warehouse the type of items they sell are suits, tuxedos, dress shirts, classy shoes and accessories. I asked the workers named Jeremy what kind of men come into buy things.

A lot of women and even preteens shop at Victoria Secrets for bras, underwear, swimwear, and sportswear. Because Victoria secret divides there store into two parts: one part is Victoria Secrets and that’s more of lingerie type clothing and night wear while the second side is PINK which is still Victoria Secret but that side sell more sportswear, accessories and even things for your room. PINK is more for the younger customers while Victoria Secret is more for the older and classy type of women. When you walk in there lighting is not to bright but it’s not too dim either. They have a lot of pictures of the Victoria’s Secret models all over the walls which brings in more women. Charlotte Russe is more of a store that sells everything from jeans, bottom, tops, shoes, dresses, bras, underwear and even sells plus sizes for women that have a little more meat on their bones, kind of like me. Charlotte Russe is more of classy store, the type of clothes they sell is the type that you wear if you were going out on a Friday night or if you had a job interview. There lights were dimmed and they played soothing music. The last store is Torrid; this store is for women who are plus size. They have sell the same things any none plus size store would sell. This store is one of my favorites. Being a plus size woman is hard to find my size at other stores. When I walk into Torrid they light are bright the cashiers have smiles on their

This was a store selling formal and semi-formal attire. The price tag was definitely higher than average due to housing designer suits. On the topic of gender, this store represents the attire for hegemonic masculinity, and was seen as the primary shoppers were already in semi-formal wear and those who were relatively older such as mid-twenties and up. The posters were not sexually suggestive, rather demonstrated sophistication from the models. This symbolize hegemony in males whereby to exercise via sophistication, and how one must already have some sort of financial freedom to afford designer clothing.…

Hopeful companies across the globe attempt to alter the minds of buyers through varying advertisements that contain photographs of what individual establishments believe will draw people in to have consistent consumers. Women around the world shop at Victoria’s Secret hoping they will find undergarments that are perfect for their own type of body because the advertisements displayed publicly seem satisfactory. However, not all women have the ability to achieve their goals and feel content after shopping. Within Victoria’s Secret advertisements, numerous people overlook the superficial generalizations that the admired lingerie company makes about gender roles and reinforcing maintainable beauty standards. By including in their advertisements statements like “get your wings,” “the perfect body,” and “a body for everyone,” Victoria’s Secret portrays women in a false, “perfect” light through their use of skinny looking, and impractical models as well as their attempt to depict all women as angelic individuals.…

For this observation, I decided an appropriate setting would be the mall, due to the fact that people from many different races, ethnicities, and backgrounds tend to be present on any given day. I observed people mainly near Barnes and Noble and Starbucks, however, I also examined people walking about the mall in general. To narrow the scope of my observation, I decided to focus on a number of interconnected themes: gender roles, race, ethnicity, and kinship. Gender roles is a major theme found not only in the mall, but in the grocery store, at school, at work, and even at home. A gender role is defined as a set of standards that a society puts forth to dictate what types of behaviors are generally deemed acceptable for either gender.…
