    Weapons Test Reflection

I recently took a series of implicit bias tests for this course and was both surprised and unsurprised with my results. On the first test I took, the “Weapons” test, my results showed a moderate automatic association for Harmless objects with White Americans and Weapons with Black Americans. This test’s design initially struck me as odd as the weapons they choose to use were atypical of my understanding of violent crimes. Showing cannons and flails were not the typical weapons I would picture when thinking of weapons used to commit crimes in the modern era. I thought it was interesting how at first the researchers associated the weapons with Blacks and the non-harmful objects with Whites.…

The course AFAS 160 D1 is my first online class, and until now I still felt lucky to choose this class as one of my general education classes, because it gave me a great opportunity and an eye-opening experience about learning the African American Culture which I have never learned before and also gave me a chance to learn online. Describing this course to someone else, I would say this class is interesting and if you want to learn this class well, you need to prepare the Voice Thread and read the book carefully. To be honest, making videos on Voice Thread gave me a unique experience. I still remembered the first time I made a video on Voice Thread how nervous I was, I was afraid to have different ideas with other students and worried if they disagreed with me what should I do?…

Throughout high school, I had the opportunity to take on leadership roles to help strengthen my community by providing students with a safe, inclusive, and satisfying environment to learn in. As an RA, I would be able to provide the same environment for my residents to help them reach personal growth. I want to become the person that my residents feel comfortable approaching whenever they are in need of resources, advice or just a person to vent to about any situation no matter how big or small they may feel the situation is. As an RA, I would make it my mission to have my residents feel relieved and welcomed every time they enter their floor. I’ve been placed in various situations where I was able to give comfort and hope to those in my community…

My experiences in P-12 with diverse student populations range from helping students who are dealing with severe issues of poverty when I was a part of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program at my local Friendly House, to also dealing with students who were on IEPs for dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, Autism, and mood disorders, such as, depression and anxiety while in my FEEP program. I also had students while in my FEEP program who had behavioral issues and had to be placed on behavioral plans. What I learned from my experiences is that it is important to treat every student equally. To never listen to “Oh, they are the bad kid” because sometimes all students need is someone to believe in them and give them a new start. All of these students were capable…

People experience many different kinds of emotions, and in order for people to clearly recognize how other people are feeling, they must ask questions in order to completely understand the situation without causing a large amount of tension. When conflict occurs between two people, one must be careful to not cause additional tension between the two parties. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is through perception checks. The purpose of a perception check is to clarify nonverbal behavior by stating the behavior, giving possible interpretations, then finally listening and paraphrasing what was actually happening. Perception checks helped me to effectively avoid conflict with my family by discovering what was actually going on in…

Reflect on what you read in this chapter. In the second chapter, I learned that one needs to extract deep insights from their crucible experiences and make learning from those experiences an ongoing activity. Although leadership experiences are very helpful in shaping one’s personality and leadership style, it is the learning from and reflection on those experiences that actually brings the real “gold” out of an individual. After a person experiences crucible moment, the key to success is to not get stuck or chafed by the ramifications but to find opportunities to learn and grow from those experiences.…
