The purpose of this research is to discover if gender inequality can be found in the film industry, and of the change in women’s role in cinema. The film industry does not solely rest on the screen, but also on the work behind the scenes. By conducting a survey online, data was collected on the opinion of inequality in the film industry from the opinions of students at Purdue University. Of the student’s polled, 61% believe there is gender inequality that can be found in the film industry. The research was also collected from several written articles to show what it is like for women to work in this specific career field. According to my survey, students have noticed a change in the role of women in the film industry, which may show the success of gender equality in the field, as well as promises continual improvement.

Introduction Film has been around for more than a century. It has made us laugh, cry, get mad, and contemplate new ideas. Cinema has allowed for new worlds to be brought to life before our very eyes and has even changed the world around us in many ways. Where would our society be without works such as Titanic, Avatar, Gone With The Wind, and The Wizard of Oz? Of course, the list of great films can stretch for miles, but what of the names of the women who made these films possible, on and off screen? The film industry is famously male-dominated.
