Gender is often confused with sex. However, sex is the biological differences between male and female while gender is socially constructed traits and positions that make a male a male and a female a female. Michael Kimmel discusses this in Human Beings – An Engendered Species and explains how gender is socially constructed. Gender is socially created through gender differences which are created through social (patterns of behavior and relationships) and cultural (ideas and values) structures. These gender differences create gender inequality (Kimmel, 333). Social structures (gender factories) such as family, school, and the workplace help to form and reinforce gender differences. Cultural structures such as the interplanetary theory of gender that men and women are from different planets and hence innately different and the reinforcement of gender differences in media help to prove that gender is a social construction.
The terms hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity are cultural structures that help to socially construct gender. The two documentaries “Miss Representation” and “Tough Guise 2” exhibit emphasized femininity and hegemonic masculinity. Emphasized femininity is the concept of looking perfect without any effort (effortless perfection) and of a female forced to conform to ideals that men and media have for them.
