Gender and Sex
For most people, the terms “gender” and “sex” are synonymous and can be used interchangeably. These terms, however, are not interchangeable; and using them as such is harmful to those whose sex and gender are different. It is also assumed that there are only two possible outcomes – in reality sex and gender occur on a spectrum, not in a binary system. So what is gender and sex really?
Gender and Sex Jessica Junger, in her research article “More than Just Two Sexes: The Neural Correlates of Voice Gender Perception in Gender Dysphoria”, defines gender as “one’s public role as male or female with biological and psychological factors interacting with gender development.” Along with that she defines expressed gender as the alternative identities one may identify as beyond the gender stereotypes. Sex, or biological gender, is defined in an article on “” as including physical attributes such as external genitalia, sex chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones, and internal reproductive structures” and gender is defined as a complex relationship between an individual’s sex, a sense of the sex one identifies with (gender identity), and how one presents themselves according to their gender identity. According to these articles, sex is the organs you are born with, whether male or female, and gender is how you identify with male or female identities. What happens when an individual has two types of genitals or identifies with both or neither gender?…
