Gary Soto Seventh Grade Essay

Improved Essays
Gary Soto manages to cleverly capture the many emotions, reactions and challenges that middle school students may face on the first day of school in his short story, “Seventh Grade”. The story follows Victor, the main character, from his arrival at school until the afternoon, as he sees old friends and attempts to attract the attention of a girl he likes named Teresa. Victor has signed up for French as his elective in hopes of having a class with her. One of the many strategies he uses to impress her is to raise his hand when the teacher asks if anyone knows French. When the teacher directly asks Victor a question he “tried to bluff his way out by making noises that sound French.” Fortunately the teacher, Mr. Bueller, chooses to ignore the opportunity to humiliate Victor, remembering his own antics with girls back in college. Under the assumption that Victor knows French, Teresa …show more content…
The script was fairly loyal to the written version, most of the scenes were in the short story that Gary Soto had wrote. Some of the actors were believable like Michael and Teresa, but I’m not quite sure about Victor’s acting or part. He didn’t seem nervous or act nervous when Mr. Bueller picked him since he raised his hand. Michael on the other hand was a really good actor in my opinion, he scowled, he acted like Victor was his best friend and acted very well. The overall entertainment rating of the video would be 4.5 pokemon balls out of 5 pokemon balls. (5 pokemon ball rating is you’ve caught my attention, and a 1 pokemon ball out of 5 is that you didn’t catch my attention) I’d say it’s 4.5 pokemon balls because there were some things that weren’t necessary as said before. Overall, I do think that the video or film was entertaining to watch, even if it isn’t

    Hernando De Soto Analysis

Hernando de Soto stated that capital is like energy and that it is a dormant value. However, we know how to create energy like burning wood in stove produces energy in the form of heat to cook food, boil water, or warm a home. The same cannot be said with capital. We have a pretty good idea what it is, but we are not as good at turning capital into economic potential. De Soto also defines capital as the parallel life of an asset.…

The professor in the story makes all of her pupils feel lesser of an individual. The professor is rude and hateful to all of her students along with the main character. Although he is working to learn French, he felt as if the public didn’t accept him due to his lack of communication and only felt comfort knowing he wasn’t alone in this feeling. The author states, “My only comfort was the knowledge that I was not alone. Huddled in the smoky hallways and making the most of our pathetic French, my fellow students and I engaged in the sort of conversation commonly overheard in refugee camps.”…

In 1821, Boston English High School opened it’s doors and became the first public high school ever. When it first opened it had an enrollment of 101 boys and no female students. It was placed on the corner of Derne Street and Temple Street, in Boston Massachusetts. It was a school opened for boys who did not plan to attend Harvard or could not afford it. I think that this school opening played a key role in educational history because public schools today give all kinds of students the opportunity to learn just as this one did.…

Many of the singing and dancing scenes were shot seamlessly using a single take. I assume that the camera is on a track similar to a train during the “Good Morning” song because the actors move from room to room but the camera shot remains the same and follows them throughout the set. Close-up shots were used almost exclusively for kissing and other intimate scenes which I felt helped the viewer understand the emotions that the characters were feeling. I think the cinematography used in this movie was very progressive for the time period and deserves a four out of five stars. This gives the movie an overall average of 4.17…
