Gambling Cross Addiction

The effects of addiction exist all across the world impacting individuals, their families, and their social networks (Davis & Wormer, 2003, p.3). Addiction can include alcohol and substance use and misuse, food addiction, Internet addiction, and shopping addiction. One area that is overlooked in addiction is behavior addiction. This literature review will mainly focus on behavioral addiction specifically gambling and cross addiction to alcohol and smoking. This literature review will examine the research on gamblers that have a cross addiction to alcohol. Also, this paper will discuss the findings on gambling and alcohol use when the gamblers visit a gambling venue. Further, this paper will review the literature examining the relationship between gambling, alcohol, and smoking. Lastly, this review will briefly discuss the relationship between sociodemographics and substance use among past year gamblers of the Canadian public. Andrade and his colleagues discuss the relationship of gambling co-occurring with alcohol and smoking. Their research explores smoking and alcohol use separately. However, there is no research until date that looks at the prevalence rate of alcohol and smoking disorder together when researching cross addiction with gambling. Their findings reveal pathological gamblers have a lifetime rate of using alcohol at 73 percent and nicotine dependence of 60 percent. There is a correlation between alcohol and smoking, when you look at the general public in regards of lifetime problems. According to their findings, 30 percent of the public has had an alcohol addiction and 50 percent of the population smokes over a lifetime. Problem gambling has a high rate of both alcohol and smoking when examining each of the substance addiction separately (Andrade et al,
