Indian Gaming Promotes Native American Sovereignty by William Thompson and Diana R. Dever depict how effective Native American community gambling has provoked sovereignty. The motive for the increase in gaming is that the government use these revenues from these casinos and put it in infrastructure. This leads to an increase in employment opportunities for the tribal people. In 1994, the revenues from Indian gaming totaled to over three and a half billion dollars. On the other hand, compulsive gaming has led to pathological social behaviors. In the general public, the addiction rate of gaming is about 3.5 percent. In the Indian population the compulsive gaming rate is said to be 14.5 percent! A survey was conducted from students aged twelve to nineteen years, a telephone survey from twenty to eight-six, and a sampling region of active gamers in various casinos. The survey had showed huge differences between the pathological behaviors in the Indian population verses the non-Indian population. The reasons of this behavior might be from alcoholism, poverty, and high unemployment percentages. Pathological gambling will lead to compulsive behavior in the near future if they continue to gamble today. As one can see, compulsive gambling is dangerous.
