Baldwin focuses on many recurring themes to create a certain culture and viewpoints towards some of the main characters and towards Christianity itself. For example, Baldwin keeps focusing on the theme of pride and its importance to the overall plot line of the novel. Pride can be seen very easily in the characters, but can be seen very subtle when it comes to focusing on Christianity. For example, I believe that out of all the characters found in the novel, pride most effects Gabriel and his relationships to the members of his family. Gabriel throughout the whole novel conveys a sense of self-pride in what he does and his connection to God.…

My main question is, that despite such a strong history in republican and relatively liberal ideologies inspired by their European counterparts, why has Latin America failed to successfully implement these institutions in a meaningful way, and why it is plagued by illiberal politics and policies. Additionally, how does the Church and its followers impact politics in South America, specifically in the liberal sense. My personal interest is understanding why the states of Latin America did not unify under a similar fashion as the United States of America, but rather fought wars against each other and were plagued by economic and political decadence. In this sense, I am trying to understand how the Latino political mentality legitimized illiberal…

Every Christmas Eve our family gathers around the coffee table in our apartment in New York City. During the day we go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and buy chocolate candies from the Greenwood Pastry on the corner. Uncle Riley leads the way as we walk the streets until the light begins to fade between the office towers and the crippled gargoyles forever perched on the corners of the buildings that illuminate a golden age gone by. We laugh together and reminisce about the previous Christmases we have spent together. The elevator seems quieter on these nights, almost as if it has a respect for the holiday, but I know it’s just because we’re all crammed in there together.…
