By: wylie Rains There was once an American president that believed in equal rights for poor white people and freed slaves. This well known president was no other than president Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln found out a solution to help poor whites and slaves, also known as the Freedmen’s Bureau. Abraham was a president that didn’t believe in slavery, but in equal rights. This bureau was a solution to slavery and the cruelty of poor white people. Because of this, the United States spit in half, causing the Civil War. This bureau was an attempt to help poor whites and freed slaves have more freedoms like the people had in the North.
The Freedmen’s Bureau was appointed to Oliver Otis Howard, a union general from the Civil war, to be the commissioner of this bureau. …show more content…
Lee surrendered to General Ulysses Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. It was a temporary agency that was handed over to the War Department, made up of mostly of Civil War soldiers.
This attempt wasn’t fully carried through due to a shortage of funds, personnel, reconstruction, and politics of race. After the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, the vice president who was Andrew Johnson took office. Andrew Johnson was against Abraham Lincoln’s view about freeing slaves and rebuilt the confederates farms and plantations.He fired bureau employees that he thought were to sympathetic to blacks or freed slaves. The congress tried to create a bill to extend the bureau to give it new legal laws and Johnson vetoed.
That July, the congress overrode the veto and proceeded making that bill.The Bureau was underfunded and underemployed. The bureau only had around 900 agents. Most of the bureau representatives were subjected to violent whites, such as the Ku Klux Klan, and viewed agents as disloyal and assisted blacks too
