Critical Analysis of “The Diary of Anne Frank” The diary of Anne Frank was about a young Jewish girl during Hitler’s rise to power. Anne faced many struggles during this time including having to live with seven people in a tiny space and having to refrain from moving or speaking during the day from Mondays through Fridays. Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett beautifully portrayed the life story of Anne frank through the play “The Diary of Anne Frank” using irony, external conflict, and foreshadowing to show her hardships and struggles during World War II. Throughout the play, the authors use irony, the element of surprise/contradictory statements to develop the plot/story line of this literature. One example of foreshadowing is revealed in 1945 when Mr. Frank sees the glove and the scarf on the hook and breaks down crying. This foreshadows that the scarf and glove have sentimental value. Later this is proven back in 1942 when Anne gives Mr. Frank a multicolored scarf for Hanukkah (713,739). Next Anne has a nightmare about the Nazis coming and taking them away just like her best friend Jopie. This foreshadows that the Nazis will find the secret Annex and take them away to the concentration camp, which is later proven at the end of the play, leaving the members of the Annex only a few minutes to grab their things (736,776-777). The final example of foreshadowing is seen when Peter burns his star of David. This foreshadows that they will not be able to leave the Annex for a very long time. Later on, Anne realizes that she will never be able to leave the Annex or go downstairs until the war is over (709,712).
