Foreshadowing In Of Mice And Men Essay

In the novel “of mice and men” and the film/movie “the green mile” foreshadowing is used in both “of mice and men” and “the green mile” to create a build up to the fate of the characters involved. This technique is used to keep the reader and viewer interested. Both “of mice and men” and “the green mile” use similar techniques to foreshadow. These include, hinting, warnings and also the use of flashbacks. Events that originally seemed unrelated can also be used as a form of foreshadowing. Lennie petting the dead mouse, Lennie being run out of Weed for the incident involving the girl in the red dress, and Lennie killing his puppy all of which anticipate Lennie accidentally killing Curley’s wife, the death of Candy’s dog, which anticipates the death of Lennie, Candy’s regret that he didn’t kill his old dog himself, which anticipates George’s decision to shoot Lennie. At the beginning of ‘’the green mile’’ we see Paul get emotional while watching a film but we do not know why but near the end we realize it was because it was John Coffee’s last wish before he was executed. …show more content…
Their actions ultimately lead to inevitable karma because of the way they treat other people we see foreshadowing is shown because we can see that they will inevitably suffer the effects of karma due to their actions earlier in both “of mice and men” and “the green mile”.
We also see foreshadowing in the sense of John Coffees magical abilities in “the green mile” when he first heals William from one of the other cells after he was shot by Percy. After this we can see that he will use these healing powers throughout the novel with mister jangles the mouse and the wife of the prisons warden on both occasions he was successful in healing them.
