A football helmet does a great job of protecting the brain from major injuries like blood clots, skull fractures, and scalp lacerations, but many times they do not protect against concussive injuries. The brain freely moves or “floats” in cerebrospinal fluid so a blow to the head can cause the brain to move within the skull and smack against it. A new design created by Dr. Julian Bailes at the Brain Injury Research Institute aims to prevent this scenario. Bailes explained that the motion of the brain after impact leads to the tearing of fibers which causes concussions.
