We hypothesized that curly wing flies would have difficulty courting past the flapping of its wings to create a “love song”. The FraxE flies are model organisms of a mutation that causes mental retardation and various behavioral problems. We did not expect very much courtship at all in this group. Lilli flies were similar to the FraxE model except they had the protein that was lost with the mutation placed roughly 50% back into them. We thought the flies with this mutation would have more courtship then the FraxE but less than the curly wing fly.…

While the nose of this fly was overly extended and may have represented a significant disadvantage to its aerodynamic abilities, it was extremely useful to retrieving the sweet nectar within the longer flowers that are unreachable by other species of flies with shorter proboscises. The question of natural selection and why a flower would develop with such a long stem that would allow only flys with such long trunks mature can and should be asked. The answer to that question is not as obvious as one would think. The factors behind the evolution of two distinctly different species that rely so heavily on each other is remarkable. In fact, the idea of coevolution may, to some extent explain how otherwise inexplicable or peculiar physical anatomical presentations can possibly be explained in the absence of an adequate evolutionary response.…

Although the flytrap cannot literally consumer a full human body, I took artistic liberty in exaggerating the flytraps size in order to capture the viewer’s eye and interest the viewer in the flytrap’s actual abilities. I also drew a glow around the flytrap to highlight its abilities to draw in prey. Throughout this sketch, I felt as though I was creating an equal medium between my two original ideas, so I felt as though it was a good final sketch for the piece before transferring it into digital media. My digital process started with creating an image of a Venus flytrap as the first layer of the digital piece.…
