The Gulag Archipelago claims, “Sleeplessness befogs the reason, undermines the will, and the human being ceases to be himself, to be his own ‘I’” (Solzenicyn). Sleep deprivation occurs when a person has gone without sleep for an extended period of time. This condition is progressive and affects every aspect of the body. Sleep helps regulate emotions, behavior, and physical health. Getting an adequate amount of rest each night reduces one's chances of having serious health concerns. An array of uncanny side effects related to poorly regulated sleep patterns increases a person's risk of developing irreversible health problems.
There are five stages of sleep which are each responsible for different tasks that allow people to rest. Four out of the five stages of sleep are called NREM also known as non rapid eye movement (“SleepDex”). Stage one is the first, “Stage 1 is light sleep where you drift in and out of sleep and can be awakened easily” (“SleepDex”). Caffeine works by heightening one’s mental awareness and increases adrenaline production (“Caffeine and Sleep”). Caffeine increases a person’s heart rate, and is primarily used to stay awake. Sleep Newzzz reports, “caffeine consumed even 6 hours before bedtime resulted in significantly diminished sleep quality and sleep quantity” (Breus). Although, caffeine stays in a person’s system for a long time, it should not be overused. It is easy to abuse the consumption of caffeine, as some people have limited awareness of side effects to this drug. Although caffeine has no essential nutritional value, reducing caffeine consumption gradually is recommended (McNight).
