Imagine getting in bed after a hard work day, your head hits the pillow and you start to drift off. This is stage one of sleeping, similar to daydreaming. Stage one is also the time in which you have the feeling of falling off of a cliff, which causes your body to jerk awake. The average sleeper spends approximately seven minutes in this stage. Stage two begins to relax the body by lowering heart rate and body temperature. During this 20 minute period our eye movements stop and brain waves become slower, except for occasional hiccups of rapid waves, also known as sleep spindles. Stage three is a transition period between light sleep and deep sleep. Brainwaves during this time are lengthy and deep. The deepest sleep occurs in a 30 minute
