There is a list of “developmental tasks” that Robert Havighurst in the reading “When Do You Become an Adult”: finding a mate, learning to live with a partner, starting a family, raising children, beginning an occupation, running a home. However, as we discussed in class, these tasks of adulthood are being increasingly delayed because of the technology revolution, sexual revolution, and women’s revolution. And thus, Robin Marantz Henig in “What Is It About 20-Somethings” suggested the cultural changes have led to “emerging adulthood”. In the movie “Good Will Hunting”, Will is going through the period of “emerging adulthood”. During his 20s, Will Hunting is biologically an adult that he reached reproductive maturity and can pass on his genes. …show more content…
He shows disorganized behavior that he seems fearful of their attachment figures, such as Dr. Sean and his girlfriend Skylar. Skylar also noticed that Will is afraid of her that she would not love him back and is afraid to take the first step because of the negativities he expects in the future. The breakup made Will to reconsider what he is going to do with his life and with whom. As Julie Beck described in “When Are You Really an Adult”, the period of “emerging adulthood” is flailing. It is the age of identity exploration, of trying out various possibilities, especially in love and work. Will has tried different work at school, in the construction site, and with the top mathematicians before making a decision for his career. The society needs to protect these young people and to offer a chance for them to explore. Without protections and support, many young people like Will might end up in the jail and lost in life. Spending this period exploring to get ourselves on a pathway that really fits us is hard; however, there is a snowball effect of finding the right fit, the right partner, the right job, and the right place to live. When we age, the cost for us to explore increases and thus we should utilize this period

When one tries to pursue an education with the only goal to create a better future for themselves, they miss out on the other aspects education has to offer. Sure, they will still glean some of the benefits unknowingly, but overall, they will not make as much progress as a person. Davis shows the importance of all the other aspects of education by calculating and comparing hours in a week. He finds that on average, a person will only spend 43.5 hours in a week working while they have 70.6 other non-sleeping hours a week (Davis 29). These numbers show that the career, the destiny people are preparing for themselves, accounts for less than half of an average person’s life.…

Alana Picard Mr. Santaella Enc 1101 31 August 2017 Society Changes Robin Henig who wrote “What is it About 20-Somethings?” argues that the twenties are a developmental stage for humans that comes before adulthood. She states that to be an adult, a person must have a degree, be married with children, be financially independent, and have moved out. While in 1960 that may have been the case, in 2017 it is not. The economy is nothing like it was in the 60’s, lifestyles have also changed significantly since then and for a person to move out of their parents house these days is nearly impossible until they have a stable and well paying job. Robin says that “reaching adulthood is happening later than ever” (Henig) which I, personally disagree with.…

This is Why I’ll Never be an Adult The story that I have connected with the most is This is Why I’ll Never be an Adult by Allie Brosh. I think Brosh’s message is to not take life so seriously, and that sometimes it is okay to just be yourself. Sometimes it is okay to forgive yourself for your shortcomings, and to celebrate the little things, especially as we age and gain more experience in life. The reason I choose this text was because I feel like many people can relate to how Brosh describes feeling though her story.…

When do kids become adults? A question that's frequently debated across the world, and for good reason too. The answers to this question impact when people are given certain responsibilities, greatly affecting the overall population. For example, if people were allowed to drive at the age of thirteen, we may or may not have more accidents. This would affect not only those 13 year olds, but everyone else involved.…

Unit 7: Occupational Engagement of the Adult Adulthood represents a time of increased independence and a decline in supervision and structure that is prominent in adolescents and childhood. The exact definition of what makes someone an adult is unclear; however, social characterization, changes in occupational engagement and a shift in roles explain the emergence of adulthood. Cronin and Mandich (2016) define the typical age span associated with early adulthood as 21 to 34 years of age. This age period is marked by dramatic life changes as one transitions from adolescence to adulthood. Alternatively, middle adulthood, generally defined by the age span of 35 to 60 years of age, is characterized by stagnant behaviors as individuals continue to…

Emerging Adulthood is an ambiguous period in a person’s life. It is a period that most people do not know who they are as a person or know what to expect next. Throughout the first week of class we learned where the term emerging adults came from and how it became such a phenomenon in the field of Psychology. Arnett (2014) defines emerging adulthood as an age of identity exploration, instability, self-focus, feeling of in-between, and possibilities; which he called the key features of emerging adulthood. After learning about the five key features in emerging adults, there were three that stood out to be me; the age of identity exploration, instability and self-focus.…

Hi Vy! I agree about emerging adulthood developing because in our society we are doing things out of order. I went to college, then moved out, had kids, got a job by the time I was 22 and now I'm still in school. I believe I skipped the emerging adult stage since I support my self, moved out on my own, and had kids. The other thing I thought about, like you did too, was that adults are living with their parents longer because of the high prices of rent and houses in the Bay Area.…

Young people have continually been a huge subject in our society. People often define youth as just a period between childhood and adult age, but youth is not simply that. There can be a variety of different ways in which we can identify youth and its true meaning in relation to different aspects and influences in our surroundings. Youth can be argued as a social construct rather than a universal concept because everyone has different experiences in their lives and not everyone experiences youth. It is important to understand every aspect that contributes to what youth is, because there is so much more to youth than a group of people or an age.…

Snippets from adult commentary about their state in life reveal two general perspectives: One, overwhelmed by the responsibilities of adulthood, wishes to go back to the good old times were life was much simpler. And the other is glad that past has gone and embraces adulthood and its quirks. Oftentimes, the portrayal of a day-to-day routine of going to a passionless job and going home with not much time or money to do anything other than eat and sleep makes me fear for my future. With that thought in mind, I seek answers that can fill the void that will potentially hollow as I grow older and wonder about what I have done with the life I have been given. Have I wasted it on being on being lost, stuck, and unhappy?…
