According to Invitation to the Lifespan, Beth, the first women I interviewed, is in the Emerging Adulthood stage of life. Emerging adulthood is the period of life between 18 and 25 and is considered the transitioning phase from adolescence to adulthood. (Berger, 2016) Beth is an 18-year-old female and the older of two children. She is currently in her freshman year at a University in California. She is unmarried, which is typical of people in the emerging adulthood stage. (Berger, 2016)
Emerging adulthood is characterized by great learning and growth, both physically and psychologically. This stage is full of changes: moving out from under parental authority, asserting your independence, and going to college. (Berger, 2016) Beth says that more freedom and the feeling of entering the real world is one of the main differences in this stage. She

Berger states, “Parents can be the most important bond in a young adult’s life.” (2016) This principle is certainly true of Beth. Despite her desire to exert her independence, her family play a big role in her life and she dislikes being so far away from home. She reflected that “her parents and sister are the most important people in her life.” Consequently, separation from family was one of the main things that makes her sad. Because of this separation from family, Beth is striving to form a support system at college. She says making friends and meeting people is very important to her. This is an example of Erikson’s stage of intimacy vs. isolation, in which young adults are challenged to form deep connections which others. (Berger, 2016) Beth is doing well with this stage. She told me she has made a lot of friends in the new environment of college, more than she ever had in high school. This is consistent with that Berger states, “Because emerging adults are entering the worlds of work, college, and community; they have more friends- than at any other stage of life.”

Imagine a world where actions have no consequences, where chaos flourishes, and base desires rule decisions. One can be considered a young person when they have not reached maturity. Maturity plays a big role in decision making, as your thoughts require to be thought out. Factors include the result of your settlement or following the proper policies that carry out your action. Young people who lack guidance from adults in their lives cannot succeed due to their lack of experience, tendency to not obey laws, and inability to realize the consequences that comes with their actions.…

So, what makes someone be considered an adult when they grow up? When they’re 18, 25 or when they’re above 18, but they’re fully mature before the age of 25. So why do people say the age should be 18, even though there are many 18 year olds who are considered an “adult” but still don’t make the right decisions for themselves and can’t even take care of themselves? Same goes for 25, why should that age be considered an adult? Well the most reasonable answer to determine adulthood is when they’re mature…

The article, “Race, Ethnicity, and Emerging Adulthood: Retrospect and Prospects”, by Moin Syed and Lauren L. Mitchell was conducted in 2013 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. The researchers state, “The purpose of this article is to fill this gap by conducting a conceptual review of the literature on race, ethnicity, and emerging adulthood. In addition, the purpose of this article is to provide a review of what is known, and what remains to be known, about the role of race and ethnicity for emerging adulthood” (Mitchell & Syed, 2013, p. 83). The intent of this study was to determine what considers an individual to be classified as emerging adulthood based on the contribution to the family and social class levels. Researchers defined the term emerging adulthood as a term “that applies to a developmental period of the life span, roughly of age 18-29” (Mitchell & Syed, 2013, p. 83).…

A motif that haunts the months of college applications and preparation is the daunting idea of seniors entering into the "real world." An alleged, new realm of reality that discredits the validity of the last few years in high school, not to mention the three before that and all the experiences previously. This concept coincides seamlessly with the idea that college is a beacon of newfound adulthood. Even so, each student's differing personality, aspirations, culture and tribulations falsifies the belief that adulthood is that straightforward. Thus, in order to define the moment that marked my transition into adulthood, I must first define what being an adult means to me.…

Emerging Adulthood is an ambiguous period in a person’s life. It is a period that most people do not know who they are as a person or know what to expect next. Throughout the first week of class we learned where the term emerging adults came from and how it became such a phenomenon in the field of Psychology. Arnett (2014) defines emerging adulthood as an age of identity exploration, instability, self-focus, feeling of in-between, and possibilities; which he called the key features of emerging adulthood. After learning about the five key features in emerging adults, there were three that stood out to be me; the age of identity exploration, instability and self-focus.…

Three specific challenges adolescents might face as they transition into adulthood is that of getting a job, going to college and starting a family. For most teens, getting a job (employment) is a way for them to make money, but “in the employment realm, skills training involves teaching youth basic job skills (e.g., word processing) for high demand jobs.” (Hadley, 2010, p.3) in which case not all adolescents have the skills for high demand jobs, but yet “education and career programs were more effective for younger youth than older youth (specifically, youth in their late teens than young adults).” (Hadley, 2010, p.5) giving them the advantage of gaining good employment.…
