Film Analysis: The Godfather

Improved Essays
Consistently rated among the top films made of all time, Godfather trivia should be interesting to anyone with an interest in classic films. Most recently, to show how highly it is regarded, the AFI ranked it only behind Citizen Kane on one of their best movie lists. The film was based on a book written by Mario Puzo, and tells the story of the Corleone mob family.

The Godfather, the novel, was one of the most successful novels of all time. The film achieved similar success and recognition, and many feel that was in a large part due to the participation of Puzo in the crafting of the screen play. A Godfather quiz shows that the film was co-wrote by Puzo, Francis Ford-Coppola (the director of the film) and Robert Towne.

In the film, Robert De Niro, a well-known actor, plays the realistic monster tremendously. De Niro’s actions time and time again in the movie display non-human characteristics to entertain the viewer. Despite James Berardinelli’s review of “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (United States, 1994)” (page. 1) , where he states “the creature seems almost the more “human “ of the two”, I personally think the monster portrays less human characteristics then Victor, as Victor shows human errors time and time again. Kenneth Branagh portrays the character of Victor Frankenstein, perfectly as he shows distress and emotion to what the monster has done to him.…

I've seen both The Godfather and Godfather part 2. I personally prefer Godfather part 2. I felt like the second movie had a better story line and was more engaging. You really get to see what power does to someone. I also like the flashbacks scenes, it shows both father and son growing up in the mafia world and how different both godfathers…

The Maltese Falcon is the first movie directed by John Huston who in his illustrious career was nominated for 15 Oscars. The beauty of the film is that there is not a single waste line nor a single waste shot nor a single waste performance. Everything is so perfect & each character is very well developed. I felt Huston has filtered the movie like water, over & over, until it became so perfect.…

Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane captivates the film world with his innovative and avant garde approaches. At such a young age, Welles is able to compile many visual and sound aspects to help portray emotions and feelings of the characters. He enhances the audience’s experience when he adds overlapping dialogue to the film. During this time, it was a major progression because many films’ dialogue when characters were on screen. One of my favorite movies is Bertolucci’s Il Conformista. It tells the story of an Italian fascist who is commissioned to assassinate his mentor while on his honeymoon. The characters are intense and flawed; there are no heroes. Bertolucci’s rapid-fire cinematography and sharp bursts of color ensnare you in the movie just as much as Marcello is trapped in 1930s Rome.…

Film noir, in the most traditional sense, is a genre of cinematographic film notable by a tone of pessimism and fatalism. From the forties and fifties - when the genre was first identified with American detective or thriller films - film noir has since experienced a resurgence at the dawn of the new century, often dubbed as “neo-noir” films. One film in the neo-noir category is Pulp Fiction, directed by Quentin Tarantino. The title, “pulp fiction,” owes itself to the “cheap fiction magazines printed in the United States from the end of the nineteenth century until the middle of the twentieth” (Bailey). The disposable wood pulp-based paper the fiction was printed on was meant to be thrown away and passed on.…

The selected scene is from 37:51 to 39:53 in the film Godfather, Part 2; altogether, there are 15 shots in this duration. This scene is centered with the conversation between Michael Corleone and his step-brother Tom Hagen. This conversation is expected to be very “private”, only between Michael and Tom. Therefore, both lighting and camera shots have to create the sense of mystique. In order to do so, generally speaking, the lighting in this room is very dark.…

Don Corleone appeared at the very start of the film, which was the wedding party of Don’s daughter Coney, and the beginning scenes already fully demonstrated the Godfather’s high and divine place. As Sicilians never refused any requests on a wedding day, many people came to the Godfather for “justice”, one of whom was Bonasera, an Italian-American undertaker. The film started by his famous line, “I believe in America”, at which time the screen was still dark; then his face and forehead appeared on the screen, and he continued “America has made my fortune”. However, America failed to give him justice: His daughter was beaten to disfigurement and almost raped but the suspects only received a suspended sentence.…

Other than that, I agreed on one of quotes stating how the parallel storylines of Vito and Michael Corleone should’ve been two separate films. “To be sure, the life of young Vito helps to explain the forming of the adult Don Corleone, and to establish in the film the Sicilian code of omerta. As Michael changes, we see why he feels that he must. He must play the game by its rules. But I am not sure the flashbacks strengthen the film.…

Orson Welles’ first film, “Citizen Kane,” richly realizes the full potential of excellent craftsmanship. Every perceivable element of cinema is expertly utilized to drive the story, themes and tones that “Citizen Kane” present. This is especially apparent in the scene that follows Susan leaving Kane. This scene’s manipulation of mise-en-scène, editing and sound bring together all of Welles’ ideas and drive them beyond the finish line. Mise en scène is what appears in the frame, what the viewer sees.…
