Situations typically get bad to worse during a secondary attack, when our first responders are in the…
When news media outlets report about violent crimes throughout the nation, many people have become de-sensitized to the fact that violence has become a part of everyday life. But how do people feel when a child escalates to a level of unthinkable violence? In August of 1993, Eric Smith was accused, tried, and convicted for the murder of 4 year old Derrick Robie. The community of Steuben County, New York were in shock and disgusted but were unaware that Eric Smith, who was 13 at the time, committed this heinous crime.…
Mindy (Mytien) Nguyen Professor Montagne Anthropology 185 03 November 2015 Innate or Learned? Aggression refers to an array of behaviors that may have consequences in both physical and psychological harm to oneself, others, or objects in the environment. It can take a variety of forms that include physical, verbal, mental, and emotional. As aggression progresses in human behavior from adolescent to adult, we often wonder if these qualities are innate in humans or if it is a learned behavior.…

Hi Dawn, I agree that cognitive dissonance can be positive or negative depending on how it is handled. I love your positive attitude but confused at the same time about the situation of doing your work and incorporating your supervisor work also. I can see that being challenging because it is a lot but you prioritize and made it work for the good of both. This is what makes a healthy work environment when you are able to help one another and work together as a team. We may question ourselves about doing certain things on a job but you never know the great award that lies a head therefore it is always good to try and keep a positive attitude.…
Walton claims that fear for oneself includes two requirements, one is a physiological state of being that is characteristic for feeling fear and that one holds the appropriate belief, the second is that having an emotion like fear requires being motivated, or having the tendency to do certain things. Walton then uses those claims to show that although we might think we are feeling fear, we in actuality are feeling a quasi or fictional fear. Our fictional emotion comes from us believing the fiction is fictionally real and does not meet the requirements for a real emotion. A monster attacking a character is an example of how although we believe we are feeling fear in reality we are not because we have no motivation to react as though the monster…
Introduction A cancer diagnosis can be very traumatic and disrupt an individual’s life in a number of ways. There are many challenges that tend to arise for most individuals with cancer, such as altered interpersonal relationships, a struggle for independence, disruption in achievements, body image issues, and existential issues. However, because cancer can affect anyone, the ways individuals with cancer experience their journeys vary based on their developmental stage, intrapersonal style, and interpersonal style (Holland & Rowland, 1999). Relationships are always altered in some way after a cancer diagnosis (Fujinami, Otis-Green, Klein, Sidhu, & Ferrell, 2012; Holland & Rowland, 1999).…
American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” Fear can be caused by many things and become many things, but the type of fear that causes people to stay quiet or even lie can be particularly devastating. A real life example of this fear could be as simple as a thief blaming their thievery on someone else; however, an extreme example of this devastation can be shown in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, where fear led an entire city to kill several of their own innocent people. Even though this story is technically historical fiction, it still provides fantastic scenarios of how fear defeats people. In act one a group of girls accused several people of witchcraft because they feared…
Police officers’ jobs are very stressful and require a large amount of attention to detail. This attention to detail can be diverted when an officer is not fully prepared for duty. For example, when I am in the academy I must be fully prepped the night before in order to have my morning to get dressed and eat breakfast. However, if I do not shine my boots the night before I would need to shine them in the morning. This would shorten my morning and the potential for me to miss breakfast and as a result not perform in Physical conditioning as well.…
People are often amazed at their own psychological conditions. Sometimes we pretend that they are not there and others might not even know that a problem has occurred. Patients recovering from a suicidal attempt are often stunned when they remember they’ve thought of killing themselves. Patients with severe psychiatric disturbances often watch home videos and can’t even believe the things they did. They often ask is that really me?…
Assessment 6 Adele McSorley In this essay I will define challenging behaviour, describe four different forms and discuss how psychological theories help understand individuals behaviours. For the purpose of this report I have renamed services users in line with the Data Protection act 1998 to ensure that they have complete anonymity. Challenging behaviour can be used to describe ‘problem behaviour’, or ‘socially unacceptable behaviour’.…
The idea of leaving my own country and loved ones to an unfamiliar place was really hard for me to get out of my comfort zone. I experienced heart palpitations and had many sleepless nights bothered by the thought of change. My reaction to this fear is what Irwin Savodnik a psychiatrist at UCLA and author of the article “All Crisis, All the Time: The American Addiction to Overreaction” would describe my response as an overreaction. Savodnik adds that overreaction illustrates a made-up rationale, which manifests from our emotions and the combination of both exposure and force towards the fear causes people to disconnect from reality and be immersed in their own “world”. By holding on to the fear of changes that “in one way or another, we are…
Lastly, by coming to terms with my feelings of helplessness, I felt more empowered than I had in awhile. This caused me to realize that although I felt that way immediately after my accident, I didn’t have to always feel this way. Understanding that you no longer have to feel the way you did is a very transforming moment. Adapting this survivor mentality is the last step towards recovery, and after reaching it anything seems possible.…
Coulter, Mallet and Singer examined the idea of different associations of mental toughness in a high-performance sport setting. Participants were chosen from an Australian Football League club that was known for its mental toughness from persevering through obstacles such as risk of disbandment. The Player Development Manager of the club chose 9 individuals from the club to participate in Coulter’s research. There were 4 coaches between the ages of 31 and 34 and 5 players between the ages of 24 and 26. To measure mental toughness, the researchers used photo elicitation of artifacts and qualitative interviews which included focus groups and individual interviews.…
