Faith and religion is a vital part of humanity that can be traced back to the beginning of time, but the real question lies in why it is important to know and study it. By being in doctrine this year I have learned a lot about my faith and what exactly it means you believe when you say you are a Christian. Doctrine by definition is what the whole Bible teaches us today about some particular topic (Grudem 483). Therefore, it has some application to our lives. In addition, the most important reason for studying our beliefs is to “to obey the command of Jesus to teach believers to observe all that he commanded” (Grudem 22). According to Matthew 28:19-20, we are to go and make disciples of all nations by using what Jesus had taught them. As Christians, we cannot fulfill this commission if we do not study our faith and know what we are to teach to the world. It is important for Christians to know what they believe in order to defend their faith because if Christians do not fully understand their faith, then it would be impossible to evangelize to people of other religions who are trained to know their own faith. By studying our faith, we can overcome our wrong ideas, we can make better decisions, and it will help us grow as Christians (Grudem 23). Bibliology, Theology, Pneumatology, Christology, and Ecclesiology all carry specific application to our lives that carry a certain level of importance in our Christian walk.
