Fahrenheit 451: A True Hero

A hero is not someone who goes against the law and society. Guy Montag does just that in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. He goes against what being a hero means. Montag cannot be considered a heroic figure because of his past as a fireman and his criminal acts even though some might say they were justified. Montag’s past as a fireman and his way of thinking is why he can not be a hero. As a fireman Montag used to burn books just like all the other firemen. He didn’t just do it because it was his job he enjoyed doing it. When Montag was burning books he “grinned the fierce grin of all men signed and driven back by flame” (Bradbury 2). If Montag really thought burning books was so bad then why would he continue the family tradition and become …show more content…
He broke the law by hiding books in his home but even worse he murdered Beatty for standing up for what he believed in. Montag burned him with a flamethrower and Beatty “flopped over and over and twisted in on himself like a charred wax doll” (113). Then instead of standing up and taking the consequences he “ran steadily for six blocks in the alley” fleeing from the law (117). If that wasn’t bad enough he let an innocent man die when the “Mechanical Hound rushed forward” and “it’s needle shot out” and killed the poor man (142). A hero doesn't kill innocent people, a criminal does. Some might say that the murder of Beatty was justified because Montag was standing up for what he believed in but that does not make murder acceptable. Beatty was upholding the law and he also was standing up for what he believed was right. He believes that “a little learning is a dangerous thing” (102). People can’t kill someone because they don’t have the same view. Murdering an innocent person certainly is not a heroic act. In almost all societies today murder is not acceptable so why should it be in this case? Montag cannot be considered a heroic figure simply because of his actions and characteristics. He turned against the very people he worked for, broke countless laws including murdering a man, and ran away instead of facing his consequences. Montag should not be compared to a hero. If Montag is a hero then all of the movies and comic books got it

He is a highly respected firefighter. He was a stereotypical third generation firefighter. Beatty knew Montag had books because some of Mildred’s friends reported him. Since firefighters can have them for up to 24 hours then must turn them in, Beatty gave Montag some time to report himself. They kept note of Montag a bit more carefully after that and had the mechanical hounds go to his house since he didn’t turn them in himself.…

However, this is a false sense of justice because what Montag is doing is wrong and he is doing out of belief and the social conformity that strives everyone to be equal. Likewise, McCarthy had a false sense of justice when he was carrying out his investigation; he just accused anyone that could have been a suspected communist. Correspondingly, “despite a lack of any proof of subversion, more than 2,000 government employees lost their jobs as a result of McCarthy’s investigations” (History).…

First off, I would like to address the actions of Captain Beaty. It is difficult to pity a man who took away knowledge, and dared a man to shoot him. Montag, being from the clueless society he lives in, did not think twice about the consequences. As people living in a world today where our actions have consequences, we believe that the murder of a human being is not okay. Although, in terms of Montag's situation, it is acceptable for him to commit the case because if Montag had the knowledge that Beaty forbidden, this whole scenario would never have came about in the first place.…

Support from Faber especially however, shows that Montag has actually made the right decision. In like manner, very similar scenarios occur in Minority Report. As a matter of fact, this is seen when Anderton is faced with making the decision of making the decision to change his destiny, or to live true to it. Murder is seen as a predictable cause, and one that cannot be altered to any means other than it being stopped before it happens. But, this is only due to police forces taking matters into their own hands and interfering themselves.…

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is a dystopian novel that takes the reader on a journey through a future world where books are illegal. The novel outlines the fact that books are important to civilization in many ways, whether it be content, characters, themes, or any important historical foundation that books contain. At the end of the book, the main character, Guy Montag, grabs a few books to save from the firemen, and finds himself amongst a group of homeless book lovers who each have books, or portions of books, memorized where they are safe from the hands of firemen and the government. With the idea of being in Montag’s place and having a choice of which books I would save, I would have chosen The Color Purple, The Wind in the Willows, and The Life of Pi, each for their own unique qualities that would be valuable for future civilizations for historical reference. Rich with gender and racial history, The Color Purple by Alice Walker exemplifies what life was like in the early 1900s for southern African American women.…

People look at heroism in many ways. Some individuals refer to heroes as those who help society during and after hardships. There are two types of Heroes and Anti-Heroes. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life is a hero. A main character in a narrative that is characterized by lack of traditional heroic qualities, such as idealism of courage is an anti-hero. I believe that Sammy, the main character in John Updike's story "A+P" better fits the role of an anti-hero rather than a hero. To me, a hero tends in literary work tends to exhibits traits that society values, Heros tend to come out "on top" at the end of story.…

So in a sense, Montag had no choice but to kill Beatty, otherwise Beatty would have eventually found and killed Faber. The constitutional rights of the people in the book Fahrenheit 451 have been infringed upon. The scenes and how they break each individual amendment and clause are proof of this. If the Constitution had been destroyed in our world there is a possibility we could have ended up like the world of Fahrenheit 451, where society is a controlled chaos.…
