One day a man was tired of the way the society viewed censorship. He went agasitn society and ended up killing a man to change and rebuild society. This man was brave and courageous through it all. He stood up for what is right however would killing a person go a little too far or could he still be considered a hero? In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Montag’s thoughts about censorship and actions against Beatty are those of a hero, however some may believe he is a criminal.
The first reason why Montag’s thoughts about censorship are those of a hero is because he is being brave by going against society on how they view censorship. One of the laws in the society that Montag lives in is that books are not allowed. Firemen in this society would

Beatty is the head fireman, who burns books and houses. In order for Montag to rebuild or changing society he either has to Beatty into changing the law or he needs to kill him. One night after Beatty made Montag burn down his house because of the books Montag had kept throughout the years of being aoi fireman, Montag killed Beatty, Montag “was a shrieking blaze, a jumping, sprawling, gibbering mannikin, no longer human or known, all writhing flame on the lawn as Montag shot on continuous pulse of liquid fire on him” (Bradbury 113). Since Montag killed Beatty he is now able to change the society. Motag memorized a verse he remembered from the book of Ecclesiastes “And on either side of the river was there a tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielding her fruit every month; And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of nations” (158). This verse is from the Bible which means to rebuild and Montag is now able to rebuild society without Beatty stopping him. The runaways like Montag will live in Montag’s new society because they have the same thought as Montag. Granger approached the situation the same as Beatty by killing someone. Granger has wise words “ We all made the right kind of mistakes, or we wouldn 't be here. When we were separate individuals, all we had was rage. I struck a …show more content…
Some may say he is a criminal because of the killing of Beatty and going against society and the law. One of the ways Montag went against the law is because “They read the long afternoon through...” (Bradbury 67). You are not allowed to read books in this type of society. Also killing someone doesn 't affect the person who died but it makes the family and friends live in misery. Heros are suppose to brighten up people’s days not make them live in misery. A story similar to this is a father is "Whatever it takes" (My Daughter Was Killed on Live Television. I Will Do Whatever It Takes to End Gun Violence) to end gun violence and murder. Clearly this dad is devastated and now motivated to end it. Heros need to influence people in the right way not killing someone or going against the law. However Montag is considered a hero because he stood up for what was right and has characteristics of a hero. Montag has every single one of these characteristics “Bravery. Courage. Gallantry. Intrepidity. Valor. These words have a shared meaning, and they point to the highest aspect of the warrior spirit: heroism”(The Bravest of the Brave). Montag was the only one to be brave to kill Beatty or even go against society and show it publically. These days we consider military men heros because they are risking their life for freedom however they are killing men every day. Montag killed one person so the society could get

He was a very plain person, like the rest of community, not reading books. Montag loved burning books, in quote, he says “it was a pleasure burning books”; he even wanted to “shove a marshmallow on a stick.” The love of Montag’s job and what he does, is just what the society wants to see in him. He never did question the reason why the society stopped reading books and why they never will again, he just went on with his work and doing his job. Also, with him not questioning why everyone stopped reading books, he never did question why they had to go and burn them, burn people’s homes and even sometimes burn the people.…

When he escapes to the river, the refreshing power of water stomps out the overwhelming fire of the thoughtless society from his past, and he is able to journey away from that and discover himself and actually listen to his own ideas and thoughts for once. In fact, upon escaping the city and finding the group of “book people,” Montag discovers a new type of fire he had never known, one that, “was not burning… it was warming” (Bradbury 145). The men gather around the fire in camaraderie and comfort, both of which never would have been recognized in his past society. He had never known the positive influences of fire, he only partook in the negative inflictions it caused, the one responsible for killing Mildred, Beatty and Faber.…

Even when trapped and imprisoned, be this figuratively or literally, human beings have a tendency to assert their freedom. In a dystopian society, where freedom of decision is stifled, this rings especially true. Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, sticks true to this fact of human nature. Guy Montag, a firefighter, is the main example of this fact. Starting on the track to his rebellion, Montag begins to steal books from the homes he burns, reading them illegally in his own home.…
