Factory farming, also known as industrial farming, is a modern form of farming where livestock such as cattle, pigs, or chickens are kept in tight cages known as battery cages to meet the food consumption of human. Factory farms keep large numbers of animals to be raised for food in tight and confined spaces in order to minimize operation cost. The meat that comes from these factories are cheaper because there is enough food to meet demand. Over 99% of the meat in America comes from a factory farm. I believe that factory farms should be banned worldwide because the animals are treated unethically, factory farms are bad for the environment, the animals are injected with hormones and antibiotics and they force unnatural breeding. alone. This affects our natural resources like water, land, and fossil fuels. Factory farming creates large amounts of pollution. With as many animals that are being raised in all of these factories, there are tons of manure and other waste that is being put into lakes and rivers. Areas around the factories will have lakes and rivers that are contaminated will tons of bacteria and harmful microorganisms, making it unsafe for human consumption. The dirt that surrounds the factory farms is soiled and no longer fertile and woodlands will be destroyed in order to make the factories bigger. The air around the factory farms are very unhealthy. They give the animals, mainly the cows, low quality grain-based feed. Their bodies are not made for this type of “food” so this causes the cows to have chronic indigestion which leads to high methane emissions. Factory farming accounts for 37% of methane emissions. Methane has more than 20 times the global warming potential of CO2 (11 Facts about Factory Farming and the Environment). The process that breaks down manure also creates pollution. Bodies of water where they put all the manure are known as manure lagoons. These lagoons emit hydrogen sulfide and if inhaled, can cause nausea, headaches, vomiting and diarrhea. There is a body of water called the Chesapeake Bay. It is being ruined because a factory farm is dropping all of the waste from the animals into the water. Fecal bacteria from livestock contaminate the bay, and ultimately the seafood that can then cause food poisoning (Fox). Not being able to sell fresh and edible seafood affects the town surrounding the bay so they do not have clean water or fresh fish. So factory farms effects everything around
