Parental Involvement Strategies for Culturally Diverse Schools

Education is a team effort in which school administration, teachers, parents and community must simultaneously support on another for academic achievement to show a sharp and steady increase. “Parents know their children best, are in the best position to inform schools about their children’s needs and capacities, and are deeply invested in their children’s success (Goodwin & King, 2002, p. 7).” In order to increase student achievement in the classroom, one tool teachers use is differentiation of teaching strategies. This becomes part of the data collection, as well, for the accountability of your school 's philosophy. Moreover, the data compiled from such survey, can identify the strengths and weaknesses of the school and parental involvement, leading itself to be one of the bases for which to develop the following years school philosophy. As an administrator I would ensure to ask questions that would identify the languages spoken at home to gather some data on the parent’s cultural backgrounds. In my experience during the enrollment process for those parents that do not speak English, the students are filling out the enrollment pack and often times the information may be incorrect. Furthermore, questions would include those that helped to school understand the traditions, schooling level, trades, employment and other culturally important information to be sure that we are meeting the needs of parents. By meeting the needs of the parents I am talking in terms of making sure the school calendar is made based on Holidays held as high importance to their culture is taken into consideration, that we provide tailored parent schooling programs for parents to help educate them to the level or their students, plan meetings and important events around most parents work schedules, and including some culturally diverse material to our curriculum, where applicable. Moreover, I would pose some open ended questions to allows them to voice comments, questions and concerns that the administration would carefully examine and take action where needed and where
